Spelling Shed includes everything you need to teach and lead spelling effectively. Part 2 of ‘How to Make the Most Out of Your Spelling Shed Subscription’ focuses on data and assessment, leagues and challenges. Read part 1 here.
Data and Assessment
Spelling Shed includes a full suite of tools to enable schools and educators to manage pupil data, including reporting on assessments. Spelling Shed tracks pupil gameplay along with their responses, which feeds into a handy data report. This is for all games, including Mastery Zone, Grammar Arcade and hive games. You can easily track how many times a pupil has played the game or the assignment, the answers given, how long they took to complete it, their score, mastered words and if they completed the whole assignment. Spelling Shed’s competency grid can help educators identify if multiple pupils in a group are struggling with the same spelling pattern or objective. This makes monitoring activity and progress simple for educators. Spelling Shed’s administration tools also allow school leaders, groups of schools and trusts to manage school data centrally.
End of Term Assessments
Assessing skills and identifying areas to improve is simple with Spelling Shed’s ready-made assessments. Each year group has a baseline assessment and end of term assessments for, you guessed it, the end of each term (autumn, spring and summer).
Leagues
Gameplay automatically enters pupils into Spelling Shed’s World Groups League, so they can see how their class compares to the rest of the world. This can easily be tracked and viewed on Spelling Shed’s World Groups League page on the website.

Lots of educators also create custom leagues to raise the profile of spelling in their school. You can choose to create a custom league and include all classes within the school. Custom leagues can be based on scores, the number of games played or the total number of correct answers given. It is up to you! You can then display the results each week on a leaderboard and may choose to present the winning class with a trophy, treat or Spelling Shed stickers. You can also set up custom leagues for just your class, groups of pupils and even teachers!
Challenges
Challenges are a good motivational tool and can be used to run competitions within the school. For example, you might decide that you are going to run a ‘Christmas Challenge’. You can set the challenge up and decide the pupils or groups that will be included, set an end date and decide how you want it to be scored. You can easily track the challenge and crown the winners at the end!
