How to Launch and Relaunch Spelling Shed with Dress as a Word Day!

Big words, bold outfits and buzzing classrooms. Spelling Shed Launch or Relaunch Day is all about enthusiasm for vocabulary. It’s more than rummaging around and getting creative to dress up as a word, it’s the start of encouraging curiosity with words, showing pupils that spelling is genuinely fun.

From clever puns to full-character transformations, teachers and pupils bring language to life in ways that last well beyond the day itself. We’re sharing practical ideas and inspiration to help you launch Spelling Shed with energy, confidence and plenty of word-powered fun!

1. Dress as a word.

It’s time to get creative. What word will you dress as? What words will your pupils dress as? Don’t worry, we’ve got lots of inspiration for you in our Dress as a Word Day Pack. Encourage pupils to use what they already have to dress as a word. Here are a few examples, including some from the EdShed team!

Three polaroid images. A lady dressed in tropical clothing with a coconut with the word 'tropical', a lady dressed in pyjamas with the word 'sleepy' and a boy dressed in bubble wrap with the word 'fragile'.
Three polaroid images. A boy dressed in a football kit with the word 'athletic', a lady dressed with magnetic objects attached to her t-shirt with the word 'magnetic' and a lady dressed in stripy coloured clothes with the word 'rainbow'.
Three polaroid images. A lady dressed in a coat, hat and scarf with the word 'warm', a lady dressed in a Christmas jumper with the word 'festive' and a lady dressed in a dressing gown with a hot water bottle with the word 'relaxed'.
